Addiction is a compulsive, chronic, physiological or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, behavior or activity having harmful physical, psychological, or social effects and typically causing well-defined symptoms and/or death (Merriam Webster). In this article, some habits, drugs and substance that are addictive will be pointed out.

Habits: These are behaviors that one exhibit often and they may include

  • Gambling

  • Sexual activities

  • Drugs and substance abuse

  • Oral diarrhea. Etc.

Gambling is fun when we're winning but what makes gambling addictive, is when winning which is the feeling of luck becomes replaced with greed that makes you want more. You can also become addicted if you keep losing due the feeling of frustration and the need to recover the lost stakes.

Drugs: Each drug acts in a specific way to change the brain’s response to stimuli, but the end result is that the experience of using the substance is so pleasurable, relaxing or energizing that it triggers your internal reward system, making you want to repeat that experience again and again. Drugs like alcohol, heroin, tobacco, marijuana, Indian hemp, cocaine are examples of these drugs. A person who drinks alcohol heavily in a sit-out is not an addict yet until he/she sees the need to drink such quantity every day.

Symptoms of addiction

  • Compulsively seeking the drug; Continuous use of the drug/substance even though it’s obviously causing harm to you or your loved ones

  • Lying or doing other things that hurt your sense of integrity in order to get the drug or exhibit that habit

  • Taking dangerous risks in order to obtain or use the drug

  • Seeing that activity as the only thing that will make you happy.

Helping an addict

  • Therapy/counselling.

Therapy might occur on a one-to-one, group, family basis depending on the needs of the individual or a combination of all methods. It is usually intensive at the onset of treatment with the number of sessions gradually reducing over time as symptoms improve.
